How will the LintAlert notify me that I need to clean my dryer duct?

Pressure levels found in the dryer duct typically increase over time due to lint build-up, animal nests or vent hoods that become inoperable. The LintAlert features an innovative and responsive digital pressure sensor. Coupled with a programmable integrated circuit, the device can determine if your dryer is ON, and what levels of pressure exist. When the pressure reaches an unsafe level, the alarm state will activate, indicating maintenance is required. The alarm state is displayed as: LED Blockage Indicator flashes on and off alternating with blue logo, with buzzer beeping. Prior to the alarm state, a slow progression of the LED Blockage Indicator will display fractional build-up.



What conditions or instances would the LintAlert not work?

  • Although quite rare, some very high-end dryers incorporate dual-motor technology, which operates the drum and exhaust fan individually. The exhaust fan adjusts the RPM's throughout the cycle, creating drastic changes in pressure. These changes will cause the LintAlert's readings to fluctuate and may trigger false alarms.
  • In high-rise structures, it is common for tenants to share a vertical exhaust shaft for the dryer. As a result, the LintAlert is unable to compensate for the varying pressure levels when multiple dryers are cycling.


How can I be assured its working?

After the initial calibration and while the dryer is ON, it is common to have the first green LED lit. In earlier versions some fluctuations to this were common and may be due to the temperature setting and weight of the load. As time passes, these fluctuations should moderate. When the dryer is OFF, only the blue logo lens should be illuminated. With continued use, perhaps within three to six months, the second green LED will light along with the first LED. If the dryer is ON and there are no LED's lit, it is possible that something has become detached behind your dryer (either the flex hose or the ¼" tubing). Sometimes condensation will occur within the first 12 inches of the tubing creating an air blockage. Also, your initial calibration of the unit may not have been done correctly.



Explain the calibration thing again.

The LintAlert monitors the pressure levels found in the exhaust conduit of the dryer. Since all dryers differ in design, it is necessary for the LintAlert to be set or calibrated for their specific output level.

Before the LintAlert is calibrated, the dryers' exhaust conduit MUST be cleaned to like new condition. This involves a few important points:

  • Replace any wire bound flex with the more efficient semi-rigid aluminum flex (optional but highly recommended).

  • Completely clean out the in-the-wall conduit with a flexible rod and rotating auger brush or have it professionally cleaned.

  • Confirm you have an efficient vent hood (termination). Some styles of older vents only open 22 degrees and are exceedingly restrictive.

The LintAlert runs a startup sequence the very first time it is plugged in to an outlet. If the dryer is ON and the conduit is in clean condition, it will permit a calibration sequence. It is important to calibrate with no clothes in the drum and with a clean lint screen. But it is also important to plug in the LintAlert BEFORE attaching the tubing to the barb. Once the calibration is complete, the LintAlert remembers this clean value setting and future calibrations are not necessary unless the dryer's exhaust conduit is modified.



Does the LintAlert retain calibration after a power failure?

Once calibration is successful, the microchip records the pressure level setting data into EEPROM (a type of memory that will retain information even without power). The data will be saved no matter how long the power is interrupted.



I accidentally re-calibrated the unit quite some time after the initial calibration. What now?

If re-calibration occurred more than six months after the initial setup, there are two options. 1. Clean the duct again to Like New condition and recalibrate again, or 2. Continue using current calibration with slight blockage. NOTE: The LintAlert operates by monitoring fractional increases in pressure in your exhaust. The unit will still work at an elevated level of blockage, but with smaller intervals between the progressions of blockage levels.



Where can I learn or determine what the error codes on the blockage indicator mean?

Please refer to the Quick Start Guide and the LintAlert Operational Flowchart. The flowchart identifies the steps during startup and calibration and will define the various light combinations.



Will the device alert me if the clear tubing is kinked?

There will not be an actual alarm, but it can be determined by observing the LED Blockage Indicator. When the dryer is ON, at least one green LED should be lit. If none are lit, then it is likely:

  • the tubing became detached at one end

  • that the tubing is kinked somewhere

  • that condensation within the tubing occurred creating an air blockage

  • that the flex hose became detached.


No LED's are lit on the front panel but the logo lens is blue, what is wrong?

This is the normal state when the dryer is OFF. If no blockage lights are lit while the dryer is ON, then it is possible something has become detached behind your dryer (either the flex hose or the ¼" tubing). Sometimes condensation will occur within the tubing creating an air blockage. Also, the initial calibration of the unit may not have been done correctly. Fluctuations in the LED Blockage Indicator are normal. This is caused by the sensitivity of the sensor and the normal variations in pressure that are a result of load size, heat setting and lint screen condition.

When performing the initial or second calibration attempt, complete each of these steps:

  1. Clean the dryer's duct work to like new condition

  2. Replace any wire-bound flex hose with the more efficient semi-rigid aluminum flex (optional but recommended)

  3. Clean the dryer's lint screen

  4. Start and run dryer with no clothes in the drum and to the usual heat setting. But it is also important to plug in the LintAlert BEFORE attaching the tubing to the barb.

  5. Recalibrate by holding the button on the front panel of the LintAlert for 12 seconds. After this step, with the dryer still ON, observe the first green LED indicator light.



When I first plugged the LintAlert in, the LED Bar is flashing on and off alternating with Blue LEDs. What does this mean?

This particular display is indicating that the LintAlert has not been calibrated. See Installation Manual or five points in FAQ right above this one for initial calibration procedures. Upon calibration the LintAlert records the specific pressure level and future calibrations are not necessary unless dryer's exhaust conduit is modified or re-cleaned. Also, see the Operational Flowchart for blockage indicator array codes.



The alarm state came on but I need to finish drying my clothes and won't be able to look into it for several days. What should I do?

The alarm state consists of a full Blockage Indicator, alternating with a flashing blue logo, and audible chime. This indicates the system back pressure is too restrictive and that there is a significant blockage. Continuing to dry laundry loads from this point on does pose some risk of fire. Doing so is at owner's risk and should be done on a "need to do" basis. NOTE: For this alarm state to be true, it should have occurred over a period of time (approximately 18 months). It is likely that the LED Blockage Indicator lights would have slowly progressed from one to maybe 4 or 5 lights. Lint build-up within the duct is generally considered typical. Rates of lint build-up vary greatly due to many conditions. Blockage can occur from a multitude of factors. Unwarranted alarm states can be accidentally triggered. To restore your LintAlert to the original calibration level simply Power Cycle the LintAlert by unplugging it for a couple seconds.



Can the tap fitting or alarm module get clogged or contaminated?

Extensive testing and research has shown that the minimal signature of the tap fitting and the minuscule flow of air required for our low-flow digital sensor does not support or permit lint build-up or contamination to any of the LintAlert components.

The high flow-impedance of the LintAlert pressure sensor limits the air-flow volume and velocity to such an extent that it is not capable of permitting lint to enter the tap fitting port or to allow lint particles to remain in the airstream throughout the journey vertically in the 6 feet of tubing. The airstream in the tubing travels very slowly at a rate of 6 feet in a half hour. Lint contamination at the tap fitting or in the sensor will not be a reliability hazard.



After several loads my first green light is now off when it has always been on.

In rare circumstances, condensation of water can occur within the first 12 inches of the ¼" tubing (generally near the connection to the Smart Tap fitting). If the tubing is too long where it creates a low spot for the water to collect, this can produce an air blockage to the LintAlert. Cut the tubing to a length that prohibits any sagging within the first 12 inches of tubing. Another possibility is that something became detached. Double check the tubing and the flex hose connections to make sure they are secure. Also be aware that the internal pressure sensor is very sensitive to pressure variations and will fluctuate like a needle in a pressure gauge. If the pressure is lower than what was originally recorded during calibration, then the blockage indicator will likely not light. The cause of lower pressure could be that the dryers' lint screen is blocked or a large load of laundry in the drum.



Can any other factors contribute to an Alarm State?

Yes, any unusual changes to the pressure may trigger an accidental alarm.

Factors include: gusty winds, snow build-up and unintentional adjustment to the vent hood or flex transition hose. If an alarm state was caused accidentally, the original calibration level can be restored by unplugging the unit for 3 seconds and then inserting back into 110v outlet (power cycle).



Is there a way to restore the LintAlert back to its original factory setting?

Yes, make sure dryer is OFF and unplug the LintAlert unit from the wall outlet and while holding the button on the front panel in, plug it back into the wall outlet. Continue to hold the button for about 2 seconds till the first and last LED light up. Note: this will erase your last calibration value and will require a new calibration procedure along with the necessary cleaning out the exhaust duct and termination hood.



The LintAlert will not calibrate, it keeps giving the error of not enough back pressure (first two LED's on the light bar blink 3 times after a calibration attempt). My dryer is on when I calibrate and the tap fitting and tubing is as per instructions. What is wrong?

It is most likely the LintAlert "woke up" for the first time with the tubing connected and the dryer running. This would have recorded a false pressure reading. The LintAlert now thinks that this recorded pressure is the "zero" pressure (pressure levels when dryer is off). The fix is pretty easy and requires a Factory Reset and then a re-calibration, but this time leave the dryer off and the tubing disconnected from the LintAlert module.

The Factory Reset procedure: make sure dryer is OFF and then unplug the LintAlert unit from the wall outlet. While holding the button on the front panel in, plug it back into the wall outlet. Continue to hold the button for about 2 seconds till the first and last LED light up and a tone is heard. Note: this will erase any values you have recorded and restore it to its initial factory setting.

Calibration: with dryer running and tubing connected, press and hold button for about 5 seconds till a tone is heard. Release the button and in about 3 seconds you should observe the first green LED is lit. When the dryer is turned off, the first LED light will go out.
